The shape of the glass influences the speed at which you drink beer

The speed at which you consume alcohol can be influenced by the shape of the glass in which it is served, according to a study from the University of Bristol (UK) published in the journal PLoS One . As Angela Attwood and her colleagues at the School of Experimental Psychology have found, curved glasses invite you to drink beer twice as fast as if you use straight glasses . When the same glasses were filled with non-alcoholic beverages, for example soft drinks, the rate of consumption was independent of the shape of the container.

As part of the same experiment, the researchers asked the participants to rate whether the amount of liquid in the glass was more than or less than 50% of its capacity. The number of errors was higher when the drink was served in the curved containers.

Given that the speed at which alcohol is consumed affects the level of intoxication that we experience, as well as the number of glasses of drink that we consume consecutively, the researchers conclude that it would be positive to promote the use of straight glasses that invite to consume alcohol slowly .
