Relegated to the back of the grid due to a penalty for changing elements of his power unit, Carlos Sainz at least had the opportunity to make himself known at the Paul Ricard circuit, thanks to a comeback in which he reached third place, before Ferrari decided to put him in the pits for fear that his medium tires would not hold up. However, the Spaniard was able to finish fifth and set the fastest lap in the race.
