Pecco Bagnaia is, right now, the fittest rider on the MotoGP grid, at least in terms of results. The Italian has won four races this year, the most, and the last two in a row, at Assen and Silverstone , cutting 42 points from the leader of the French Fabio Quartararo.
Pecco’s goal is none other than to continue winning and putting pressure on the 2021 champion, but this Saturday at Spielberg where he qualified second on the starting grid for the Austrian Grand Prix, he sent a message for the extreme competition of the Borgo Panigale bikes.
“I’m very happy,” Bagnaia said at the end of Q2, who had suffered a crash in FP4 and was unable to take advantage of the first tire in qualifying.
“I want to thank the team’s work fixing the bike after the crash, I didn’t like the second bike so much, so they’ve worked hard and very well, I’m going to invite them to dinner,” he added with a laugh.
In his first start, Pecco went wide on every lap he tried, failing to add any time to his locker, condemning him to starting 12th on the grid.
“In the first outing the rubber did not go well for me, it took me off the track in all the corners, but with the second tire everything went perfectly and now I feel very good for tomorrow,” he warned.
“It has cost me a lot all weekend, but in FP4 we have taken a step forward and I have improved, I think that will allow us to have a good race,” said Pecco, who won at Silverstone after making a bad finish week until race time.
The Italian, who is third in the championship 49 points behind Quartararo when there are still 200 at stake (eight races), does not rule out the Frenchman for victory, despite the fact that he will start fifth on the grid, surrounded by Ducati riders on all sides.
“Fabio has shown to be very fast all weekend, today he has done a great job on a used tire so he will be up front fighting with us,” he predicted.
However, Bagnaia’s concern is more domestic, the driver believes that his teammates are very strong on this track and will be tough rivals for victory. Pecco issued a warning, although at the Bologna house they consider that it is still early for team orders.
“This time there are many Ducati riders who are very fast, so it will be very difficult to win tomorrow, but we are going to try everything to achieve it,” he warned whoever it may concern.
