Pecco Bagnaia can head to Japan knowing that he has done his homework at the Aragon Grand Prix. The Ducati rider was not able to continue his run of four consecutive victories, but he came close. Specifically, only 42 thousandths.
However, the 20 points he added in Alcañiz serve to place him just 10 points behind Fabio Quartararo. The Frenchman recorded another zero in his locker after going down in the early stages of the race.
“The important thing this time was not to make any mistakes, because Fabio’s accident gave us the chance to recover a lot of points,” acknowledges Bagnaia. “On the last lap it was important to stay calm. When I saw Enea so close to me, I told myself not to make any mistakes.” And, although he took it “in stride”, he did resist finishing second.
The truth is that, yet another grand prix, Bastianini and Bagnaia were one step ahead of the rest of the drivers. “Enea and I make the difference. From my point of view, at Ducati we are eight riders who go faster every day. Enea is motivated and together we push each other, because if he is fast I know I can be too” he declared.
Pecco also admitted that, now, it is time to start thinking about the general classification , something that he had resisted doing until now. “Now the World Cup is much clearer. These ten points are the smallest difference I’ve had since the beginning of the year. We’re close.”
“I will think about the title but not too much. I know that in Japan it will not be easy, because we have less time to prepare the bike [since the test session is suspended]”.
“Now, when I lead a race, I focus on trying to ride as well as I can, without paying attention to whether those behind me close the gap with me. That helps me,” he concluded.
