Honda strengthens its relationship with Red Bull and AlphaTauri in F1

Honda officially left Formula 1 at the end of the 2021 season, but it is widely known that it has continued to help Red Bull with its power units in a deal that runs until at least the conclusion of the 2025 season.

Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri will continue to use power units manufactured by Red Bull Powertrains in collaboration with Honda for the remainder of the 2022 season and, with the aim of strengthening that partnership, the following agreements will be implemented:

  • The Honda logo will be displayed on the Red Bull RB18 and AlphaTauri AT03 from the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix until the end of this season.
  • Sergio Pérez, winner of several grand prix, will take on the role of ambassador of the “Honda Racing School (HRS)” academy. The Mexican will begin his work as an ambassador with a series of conferences for HRS students in November 2022.
  • The HRC THANKS DAY will take place on Sunday, November 27, 2022. Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez, Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda will be present.

Team Principal Christian Horner was delighted to announce this new deal: “Honda has invested heavily in hybrid technology over the course of our partnership, which has ensured that our power units are competitive, so we are very thankful to them.”

“Our joint goal is to continue to build category-dominating engines and be as successful as possible in the next three years. To continue that, we welcome the Honda logo back on our car from Suzuka.”

HRC President Koji Watanabe also wanted to talk about the new agreement: “The Honda logo on the nose and on the side of both teams’ cars represents the strong relationship between Honda and the Red Bull Group.”

“We are very happy that these cars are at the F1 Japanese Grand Prix with our logos. We support the two Red Bull Group teams that compete with power units made with Honda technology,” he concluded.

After the negotiations between the Milton Keynes and Porsche failed, Red Bull assured that they could manufacture their own power units independently, without the help of any other manufacturer. However, it is no secret that the Japanese manufacturer’s top officials are thinking about a possible return and the 2026 Formula 1 season seems like a great opportunity, since with the arrival of Red Bull Powertrains, both could divide the tasks.

Those of energy drinks would take care of the thermal engine (with a fuel that will be 100% sustainable), and Honda would take care of the electrical part of the power unit.
