'We are teaching cardiology to software'

IDOVEN is a digital medicine startup that diagnoses patients in the cloud. The heartbeats of patients of all kinds: children, athletes … are processed with artificial intelligence and a diagnosis is issued through the medical team.

The case of Tomás

Tomás is a 13-year-old boy who suffered a cardiac arrest while playing with his friends at recess. Fortunately, his classmates and teachers managed to revive him until 112 arrived.

“In young boys, like Tomás, there are usually no signs of heart disease, and it is difficult to identify what is there. Normally they have had a case in a close relative, such as an uncle or a grandfather ”, says Manuel.

From then on, Tomás had to be very careful when it comes to physical activity, that is, when it comes to being a child. “His parents contacted us and we decided to monitor Tomás’ heartbeat for 21 days.” While Tomás walked, rode his bike, slept … his heartbeat was carefully monitored. Thus, the IDOVEN team was able to analyze the risk of suffering another arrhythmia, to prevent Tomás from suffering another cardiac arrest. “It is important to do a precision medicine so that cases like Tomás’ do not happen again.”

IDOVEN collaborates with Nuubo, which manufactures monitoring textiles. The shirts they develop allow them to be worn throughout the day, except in the shower, comfortably and continuously, in order to later process that information and extract important data about those hearts.

Our artificial intelligence learns more and more using these beats: “We are teaching cardiology software”, explains Manuel. This AI learns from the heartbeats that people decide to donate, while doing the study.

This is the case of Tomás: “I donate my heartbeat to IDOVEN to prevent the same thing from happening to other boys,” he said.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world; they produce a lot of chronic disease and a lot of cost for the health system: “What IDOVEN does is identify all kinds of cases, including rare cases, so that our AI increasingly specializes in diagnosing cases and at a very affordable cost.”

Artificial intelligence is an excellent tool that can be used by cardiologists, and specialists of all kinds, to save time and make much more informed decisions when applying treatment to patients.

The main problem to carry out medical research is to have willing volunteers for it. And if they come out for free, much better. This is the story of unethical behavior in medical research.
