Dietrich Mateschitz, owner and founder of Red Bull F1, dies

After weeks of rumors about the state of health of Dietrich Mateschitz and even some media published his death on the afternoon after the Singapore GP, the news of his death this Saturday has been confirmed.

The 78-year-old Austrian, owner of 50% of Red Bull in F1, had been away from the circuits for a long time, although in the middle of last year, director Christian Horner came out to deny that he and advisor Helmut Marko were going to leave completely the category.

It can be said without missing the truth that Mateschitz was the father of Red Bull in Formula 1, the founder and great supervisor in the team’s golden era along with Sebastian Vettel and that they are now repeating with Max Verstappen.

On many occasions he has been considered the ‘Abramovich’ of Formula 1 for his immense money fortune. He was born on May 20, 1944 in Sankt Marein im Mürztal, Austria, in the Styria region that has given its name to two races in 2020 and 2021.

In his youth he studied at the University of Vienna, and already in 1984 he would co-found a company that he would launch three years later and that would later become one of the most recognized (and successful) brands in the world, Red Bull.

The energy drink manufacturer, with its carefree character, has been very involved in different sports, especially motor sports, with direct involvement, among other categories, in MotoGP (his name is next to KTM ‘s on the grid) and in Formula 1.

Mateschitz’s stage in Formula 1 began in the 1990s, with the Sauber team, and in 2004 he bought the Jaguar team and renamed it Red Bull Racing, whose mythical colors and logos he has worn in the premier class since 2005.

Red Bull obviously struggled to find glory early on, but Mateschitz saw another golden opportunity to buy Minardi when Paul Stoddart ditched the historic team for 2006, and the Austrian firm’s ‘B’ team, Toro , entered the grid. Rosso .

The history of both teams (Toro Rosso competes as AlphaTauri since 2020) is well known to everyone, especially the four consecutive titles with Vettel, the recent one with Verstappen and the one they are going to win soon in 2022.

Those triumphant years of the early 2010s were closely followed by Mateschitz, who went to the races at least once a season. In their last time on the track they had not yet regained glory with Verstappen, but without a doubt the celebration of this year’s World Cup will be dedicated to the creator of the brand. To the wealthy businessman whose state of health was not public in recent times and about whom rumors arose every day.

His death, finally and sadly, has been confirmed. Rest in peace.
