Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide , with 1,824,701 cases in 2012, according to the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology.
It is more common in men: in Spain, for every nine patients with male lung cancer, there is one female. There are two types of lung tumors: small cell lung cancer, and non-small cell or non-small cell lung cancer. The latter represents 90% of the cases. It develops more slowly and metastasizes later. The chances of survival and life expectancy are also higher in non-small cell lung cancer.
Overall survival is increasing According to EUROCARE-4 data, 10.7% of patients with lung cancer survive more than 5 years. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of lung cancer. Therefore, the best way to avoid lung cancer is to consistently avoid smoking or stay away from places where smoke is allowed.
