Curiosities about semen

There are many myths surrounding semen , a human fluid that causes a lot of fascination. Among the most popular beliefs are that semen has nutritional properties, that it is good for the skin, that it rejuvenates … But the truth is that there is no scientific evidence of the truth of such claims, beyond the morbidity they produce.

Before listing some of the most curious facts about sperm, let’s stop at the reproductive anatomy of man.

Among the male sexual organs we find the testicles, the vas deferens, the prostate, the seminal vesicle and the penis.

Sperm, male gametes that carry genetic information, are formed inside the testes, in tubes called seminiferous. From there they pass to the epididymis, where they mature until they pass into the vas deferens, a muscular tube capable of transporting sperm.

During sexual arousal, the penis fills with blood and becomes erect. And, if enough stimulation occurs, sperm are released at a speed of around 50 kilometers per hour, during a process known as ejaculation.

Before being expelled, the sperm first passes through the blister, from where it collects fluid from the seminal vesicle. Then, as it passes through the prostate, the fluid is added to give it its characteristic milky appearance. The semen then passes into the ejaculatory ducts of the penis to be released.

We know more and more about human reproduction. When the sperm reaches the ovule, it makes a kind of match between its own proteins and those on the surface of the female gamete; an association that acts as a key, allowing you to access its interior.

Throughout history, ignorance of how human reproduction works has given semen many taboos and misconceptions. Today, many of those myths continue, as does the fascination surrounding semen. Ignorance causes many to grant it properties that, in reality, it is lacking.

On the other hand, many are concerned about the quality of semen, and the quantity, wrongly relating it to masculinity. The factors that determine male fertility are variable, and are related to being in good health and physical shape. In general, smoking, being overweight and stress, among other factors, are not friends of good reproductive health.

In this gallery we review some curious facts about semen and demystify some common beliefs.
