The origin of the most used sexual words

We talk about sex. We go back to the origins of many sexual words that we often use such as fornicating, tit, masturbation, cunnilingus or Kamasutra, among others, and of which you probably do not know their etymology.

The origin of the word “penis”

First, we have to go back to Latin, to find ‘penis’ , which in turn comes from the Proto-Indo-European ‘pes’. The word ‘ penis’ made reference to any tail, beak or tail of an animal, in addition to the male sexual member , used in copulation. The term ‘phallus’ , on the other hand, comes from the Latin ‘ phallus’ , and in turn from the Greek ‘phalós’, a term used to describe painted or engraved images of the male genital organ.

The origin of the word “tit”

In the case of the breast or breast of mammals, it seems to be a derivative of ‘ thele’ (nipple), but repeating the first syllable, as is the case with the words papa or mama.

The origin of the word “kamasutra”

The Hindu book of the most varied lovemaking arts par excellence, the Kamasutra, is composed of two words that come from Sanskrit: on the one hand, ‘kama’ (which means love, sexual pleasure) and on the other ‘sutra’ (which means thread or narration); that is, the narrative of love.

The origin of the word “masturbation”

The theory that has more weight about the etymology of the word masturbation states that the term was formed from the Latin word ‘ manus’ (which means hand) and the word ‘stuprare’ (which means to desecrate), since since always, masturbation has been considered as something wrong or inadmissible ; a concept that has survived throughout the centuries. Improper carnal act, a bad reputation that has been maintained throughout the centuries.

The origin of the word “cunnilingus”

Its etymology is logically found in Latin. Cunnilingus comes from the term ‘cunnus’ (which means female vulva) and ‘ lingus’ (which means tongue).

The origin of the word “orgasm”

The word orgasm comes to us from the Greek ‘orgasmos’ (meaning swelling or fullness). Derived from ‘orgé’ (which means anger), from its beginnings it had a clearly sexual association, also associated with the ceremonies performed in honor of the god Bacchus (hence the word orgy). This sexual ardor would represent through this word the culmination of sexual pleasure during which contractions of the muscles of the genitals occur and the body is released of sexual tension.

The origin of the word “erotic”

Facing Cupid in Roman mythology, we have Eros in Greek, the god of love. In the word ‘erotic’, the suffix ‘ika’ means ‘related to’ (related to Eros), that is, the word evidences everything that is associated with what the god of love, Eros, represents.
