Of all the allergies that exist in the world, aquatic urticaria or allergy to water is one of the most curious. Only 30 or 40 people around the world have been diagnosed with this strange pathology, but those who suffer from it develop terrible hives (itchy hives) when they come into contact with water, regardless of the temperature at which it is. Thus, the rash can appear from walking in the rain, from showering or even from the simple act of sweating or crying.
In the most severe cases, it can cause blisters in the throat when trying to drink water, so that allergy sufferers in a higher state cannot drink water, tea or fruit juice, since the same effects that occur on the skin are repeated in the patient’s throat.
Why does a water allergy occur?
Although there is no clear evidence, the scientific community suggests that it could have genetic components, specifically on chromosome 2q21. However, the National Institutes of Health report that the disease rarely runs in families.
The onset of water allergy usually takes place at puberty and women have a higher incidence of this pathology than men. Although its appearance is common during puberty, there have also been cases in adults.
Is there treatment?
Treatment is rather limited for those allergic to water, although, according to the National Institutes of Health, antihistamines and steroids have proven quite helpful for some sufferers . In addition, UVB light treatments and using a barrier cream can also help.
