The electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile phones has been the subject of debate for quite some time. Does radiation have health effects? According to preliminary results of new research conducted by scientists from the US National Toxicology Program and published on the bioRXIv web repository, mobile radiation causes an increased – albeit slight – risk of two rare tumor types.
The experiment, which is being carried out with rodents, reopens the controversy between the association of mobile phone radiation and the risk of cancer.
Because human-based studies are inconclusive, the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences initiated a $ 25 million-funded study to experimentally study the effects of radiation on rats and mice.
The first conclusions are based on rats exposed for an average of 9 hours a day to radiation levels equivalent to those that a person is exposed to . The exposure lasted for two years, until the rats were older.
The results do not prove that mobile radiation poses a direct risk to humans, but it does prove that it could : 2.7% of male rodents developed gliomas; another 2.7% shwannommas in the heart; of the females, 2.7% also developed schwannomas in the heart; Unlike males, only 0.4% suffered from a glioma.
The full results of the study will be available in fall 2017.
