Do you want to have a long life and be physically and mentally strong? A study carried out by the University of Buffalo in New York (USA) shows that, in this case, it is better “to be alone than in bad company” , since relationships are usually closely linked to both physical health as mentally, so a relationship that makes us unhappy can have a profound impact on health.
The quality of a relationship during the transition to adulthood affects health more than we think. For their research, the experts spent two years studying the love relationships of 200 young people and adults, both courtships and marriages, determining that in both relationships the couple influenced people’s health.
The researchers found that about a third of the young people experienced relatively significant changes in their relationships during this period. Taking into account factors such as satisfaction, hostility, criticism, support, kindness, affection and commitment, the longer they were in high-quality relationships (happy, fulfilling) or the faster they left relationships that made them unhappy the better was his health.
Not arguing regularly with the partner and feeling comfortable with her improves the health of both. However , a stressful relationship has long-term detrimental effects.
“ Various studies have shown that being in an unhappy relationship or an unhappy marriage can cause stress, which, in turn, affects physical health. In particular, people who are not satisfied with their partner could be at greater risk of depression, high blood pressure and even heart disease, “says Ashley Barr, leader of the work.
Thus, linking one relationship after another in order not to be alone does not seem to be the best choice if we value our health.
The study has been published in The Journal of Family Psychology.
