Wearing a beard has become fashionable among the male public, but is it really hygienic? A study carried out by microbiologist John Golobic of Quest Diagnostics in New Mexico (USA) has concluded that men's facial hair contains bacteria that can usually be found in fecal matter or feces and in the intestines.
For the experiment, the expert cleaned and analyzed the contents of the beards of a group of volunteers in the laboratory, discovering that, although some of the beards contained normal bacteria, many contained bacteria similar to those that can be found in a toilet . For Golobic, the results are not surprising since previous studies had already found that beards generally harbor more microbes than shaved faces, since they trap dirt and germs much more easily.
The presence of microbes in the beard can lead to skin infections such as folliculitis , the inflammation of one or more hair follicles, which usually occurs regularly on both the beard and the legs, according to the International Foundation for the Dermatology.
The transmission of bacteria only by contact (with a simple kiss on the cheek) causes these bacteria to be transmitted with some ease thanks to the beard, so maintaining proper, regular hygiene and using a conditioner, is an essential requirement if not we want to renounce a voluptuous beard without the danger of being a source of bacteria.
