The Journal of Public Health publishes a recent study developed by a team of researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (United Kingdom) on mental health according to the sexual orientation of women .
For their study, the scientists involved 5,706 bisexual and lesbian women over 14 years of age . After analyzing the data from the questionnaires completed by all the participants regarding topics such as depression or eating disorders, they found that bisexual women were 64% more likely to suffer from eating disorders compared to lesbians. In addition, the results showed that they were 37% more likely to injure themselves and 26% more likely to suffer from depression, compared to lesbians .
“ Bisexual people are at particular risk of invisibility and marginalization in gay and lesbian communities, as well as in the rest of society. Despite the fact that bisexual women in our study suffered less discrimination on the basis of sex than lesbians, this did not represent a benefit for their mental health, ”explains Ford Hickson, co-author of the study.
Experts have found that bisexual women generally tend not to disclose their sexual tendencies to friends, family or co-workers and have less stable relationships with their partners, conditions that favor the propensity to suffer greater mental health problems .
