Cannabis use affects sperm

The fertility of young people appears to be in danger according to a new study carried out by the universities of Sheffield and Manchester (United Kingdom) that has linked the use of cannabis with a change in the morphology of the sperm that is not positive.

The study, which has been published in the journal Human Reproduction , conducted an experiment with 2,249 men who had attended fertility clinics . Both their lifestyle habits (consumption of alcohol, cannabis, tobacco …) and their sperm were analyzed.

The ejaculation samples collected revealed that those of 318 participants under the age of 30 had 4% less normal sperm than the rest, discovering that precisely they had consumed cannabis three months before the sperm sample for the experiment.

According to the researchers, this substance affects the size and shape of sperm (sperm morphology), so they may be putting their fertility at risk, since sperm with poor morphology swim worse and that makes them less efficient.

“It is reassuring to find that there are some very identifiable risks. Our data suggest that marijuana users could be counseled to stop using the drug if they are planning to start a family, "says Allan Pacey, leader of the study.
