Playing the melody of our favorite songs not only has beneficial effects on the mood. It also improves endothelial function in patients with coronary artery disease , especially if it is listened to while practicing physical exercise, as explained by Marina Deljanin during the last meeting of the European Society of Cardiology. In the experiments carried out by Deljanin, a series of subjects listened to music for 30 minutes a day while undergoing supervised aerobic training. After three weeks, it was found that, compared to those who only listened to music during that same time or those who only exercised, the combination of both "therapies" obtained better results in increasing nitric oxide and other vasodilators that decrease resistance vascular and improve heart health.
According to Deljanin, this effect of music is explained by the fact that the endorphins that we secrete in the brain when enjoying a song activate nitric oxide, which dilates the vessels, increasing the flow of blood. And he recommends combining it with physical training that is commonly used to rehabilitate patients with coronary heart disease. Of course, Deljanin warns that "there is no ideal music for everyone, and that each patient must choose which one increases their positive emotions and makes them feel happy."
