Both getting married and getting divorced can make you gain weight , especially if you have passed your thirties. For men, the risk of gaining weight increases especially after a divorce, enough to have worrying health effects. However, the probability of gaining weight in women increases especially in the two years after getting married, according to Zhenchao Qian and Dmitry Tumin, from Ohio State University, in a study they presented at the annual meeting of the Association American Sociological.
To reach this conclusion, they analyzed data from more than 10,000 subjects from 1986 to 2008, measuring the Body Mass Index (BMI), which relates weight and height. And they found that the change of marital status, either from single to married or from married to divorced, is a key moment in weight gain . Previous studies showed that men improve their health when they get married, so "when they get divorced they lose that benefit, which may explain why they gain a few extra kilos," explains Quian.
