American scientists have achievedrecover memory and hearing in mice suffering from Alzheimer’s diseaseafter increasing the concentration of a protein in your body. The method could cure people suffering from this disease.
The study shows thatincreasing levels of the CBP protein, necessary for long-term remembering, memory can be improved in mice engineered to develop Alzheimer’s, a neurodegenerative disease that affects memory, thinking, behavior, and the ability to perform daily activities. “We can reverse learning and memory deficits by increasing the level of this protein,” explained Salvatore Oddo, from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, whose study has been published in the journalProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The author noted that boosting CBP in mice restores the activity of a protein called CREB and increases the levels of another, known as BDNF, all of which are necessary to build long-term memory. In a mouse that develops symptoms like those of Alzheimer’s disease, these proteins are not activated.
Oddo and his team used harmless viruses to deliver the protein to six-month-old mice. They then evaluated learning and memory in the mice through a classic test, in which the rodent must find an exit platform hidden in a maze. The Alzheimer’s mice that received the protein coped with it as well as the healthy rodents. “They showed no more memory problems. They learned the task they were supposed to learn, and when we tested their memory, they remembered what they had learned the day before. “The Alzheimer’s mice that were given a placebo failed to learn or remember the task.
Alzheimer’s disease, considered incurable until now, affects almost 30 million and is a disease that is accompanied by the gradual loss of memory, until the general extinction of consciousness. According to statistics, the first signs of the development of the disease appear at 60-65 years.
