Shedding tears to express emotions is a behavior unique to human beings. But what is it for? Among other explanations, scientists consider that crying could help eliminate stressful chemicals from the body, which would explain its "relaxing effect." But Oren Hasson has a different theory. As this evolutionary biologist from Tel Aviv University proposes in the latest issue of the Evolutionary Psychology journal, by blurring our eyes, "tears leave us defenseless and function as a sign of submission." This inhibits aggressive behaviors and, since crying conveys vulnerability, it becomes "a strategy that can bring us closer to others emotionally." In other words, Hasson argues that tears can help build and strengthen personal relationships . And if several people cry simultaneously, the bonds are further strengthened.
? The effectiveness of this evolutionary behavior depends on who is next to us when we cry, and it is probably not effective in places like work, where we are required to hide our emotions ,? he points out.
