Thenarcissistsare self-centered subjects, who exaggerate their talents and abilities butlack empathy for those around them. And those attributes not only push them to becomeleaders, but also make others consider them suitable to be in front of a group, according to a study by Ohio University published in the latest issue of the journalPersonality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
However, in practiceegotism does not imply better leadership skills. “Narcissists like power, they are selfish, charming and outgoing, but not necessarily good group guides,” says Amy Brunell, a co-author of the research.
According to Brunell the results of his work have adirect application to everyday life, from the presidential race to the stock market. “You have to be a narcissistic person to run for president of the United States,” he says. And the same applies to the leaders of Wall Street companies who have made or lost millions of dollars in recent years. “Recent studies reveal that egomaniacs tend to make risky decisions that can be ineffective and even destructive,” recalls Brunell. Although this does not mean that excessive narcissism is to blame for current problems. “I am sure that many of the current leaders have shown excess confidence and are too sure of their abilities”, clarifies the researcher. “Butwhat lies behind the political and economic problems is much more complex than the personalities of our leaders“.
