What is thanatophobia? Causes and symptoms

The thanatophobia is a form of anxiety characterized by fear of death itself or the process of dying. It is usually known simply as “fear of dying.” We should not confuse thanatophobia with necrophobia, which is a general fear of dead or dying things, or objects associated with death.

In the Greek language, the word ‘
Thanatos ‘ means ‘death’ and ‘ phobos ‘ means ‘fear’. Thus, thanatophobia is translated as fear of death .

Having some anxiety about death is completely normal in the human condition. However, for some people, thinking about their own death or the dying process can cause intense anxiety and fear (such as fear of separation, dealing with a loss, or worrying about leaving loved ones behind ).

When such fears persist and interfere with daily life and activities, this is when it is known as thanatophobia.

In their most extreme form, these feelings can prevent a person from doing daily activities or even leaving their own home. Their fears focus on situations that could end in their death, such as pollution, dangerous objects or people.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Doctors do not classify thanatophobia as a distinct condition, but it can be classified as a specific phobia.

The fear of death is considered a phobia if the fear: arises almost every time a person thinks about dying, if it persists for more than 6 months or if it gets in the way of the flow of daily life or personal relationships.

The key symptoms that indicate that a person may have a death phobia are:

– Immediate fear or anxiety at the thought of dying or in the process of dying
– Panic attacks that can cause dizziness, hot flashes, sweating, and a high or irregular heartbeat
– Avoid situations in which thinking about death or dying may be necessary
– Feeling sick or having stomach pains at the thought of death or dying
– Have general feelings of depression or anxiety

Phobias can make a person feel isolated and avoid contact with friends and family for long periods of time.

Symptoms can come and go throughout an individual’s life. Someone with mild death anxiety may experience increased anxiety when thinking about their death or the death of a loved one, such as when they or a family member is seriously ill.

If death anxiety is related to another anxiety or depressive condition, specific symptoms related to the underlying conditions may also be experienced.

Causes and types of thanatophobia

While thanatophobia is defined as a general fear of death, there are many types and causes of this anxiety, and the way a person copes with it can vary.

Phobias are often triggered by a specific event in the past, although one does not always remember what it could be. Particular triggers for thanatophobia could include an early traumatic event related to the death or death of a loved one.

A person with a serious illness may experience thanatophobia because they are anxious to die, although poor health is not a necessary condition for someone to experience this anxiety. Instead, it does relate to psychological distress.

Medical professionals link anxiety around death to a variety of mental health conditions, including depressive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety disorders.

There are many ways a person can overcome their fear of death, and a mental health professional will be able to offer guidance and reassurance during this process.
