During spring, when the young birds are born, sometimes some end up on the ground. But that doesn’t always mean they need your help , as the parents might be around. In fact, as Dana Sánchez, a wildlife specialist at the University of Oregon (United States) argues, this will depend on how old they are, how long they have been on the ground and whether or not they are injured. In addition, it is essential to identify the age of the bird to know how to help it.
The smallest young (newborn) should not be without their parents. In contrast, the older chicks can stay longer outside the nest. According to Sánchez, you can tell if a chick is older by its feathers.
If the bird is feathered, it will be apparent to the naked eye. However, if the calf is very small, its feathers will still be closed or its skin will be completely bare. Also, as they are still unable to walk or jump, they often crawl on their wings and appear to be injured. On the other hand, chicks a few weeks old are usually covered in feathers and look more like young birds.
What to do if a bird is being attacked?
If you observe that a bird is being attacked by an animal, it is better that you do not take it home and that you call a wildlife rehabilitation center or environmental authority agents. No one should raise a bird, because birds deserve to have a normal life in the wild. Also, they usually hang out with their parents on their first flying lessons, so they are likely to be keeping an eye on the surroundings.
The chicks are too young to be alone and should be in the nest with their mother. Therefore, if you find a chick, it is best to look for the nest and put it back in its place. If you can’t find the nest or it’s too high, place the bird in a container with small drainage holes. Leave him on a high branch in a sheltered place and see if the adults are able to find them. If the calf returns to the ground or the parents do not return, you should call a rehab center.
On the other hand, chicks often spend time on the ground before they are ready to fly. If the bird is in a safe place, leave it where it is and keep it away from people and pets. Keep in mind that the parents will be supervising and will probably be providing food.
