Orangutans are long-haired orange primates that mainly inhabit Sumatra and Borneo. An estimated 40,000 to 100,000 individuals remain in Borneo, while some 14,000 orangutans survive on Sumatra. In addition, they are very intelligent animals that are closely related to humans.
Orangutans have very long arms and, in fact, they can stretch them about six feet from side to side. When an orangutan is standing up, its hands can practically touch the ground. In addition, their arms are ideal for their lifestyle, as they spend most of their time climbing the trees in the rainforest.
Regarding their diet, these intelligent primates look for food during the day. Most of their diet is made up of leaves and fruits that they collect from trees. However, they also feed on bark, flowers, branches and small insects.
On the other hand, mothers and their young have a very special bond, similar to the one that human beings maintain with their children. The young remain with their mothers for six to seven years, until they learn to survive on their own in the wild. In addition, females give birth once every eight years, making them the mammals that take the longest time between births.
