It is one of the most prestigious photography competitions in the world where we can enjoy the ingenuity, talent and, why not say it, the patience of photographers from all over the world who invest their time in wildlife to ensure that we can contemplate the most incredible and revealing snapshots of the natural world.
Some of the best photographers in the world are responsible for selecting the winning images each year, from which thousands and thousands are submitted from many countries on the planet. Selected for their creativity, technical complexity and, of course, their artistic side , this year, the photograph of a tiger was the most spectacular for the jury. It is worth highlighting the great Spanish presence among the awarded photos.
It took Russian photographer Sergey Gorshkov almost a year to capture the photograph but it seems his efforts were not in vain. Gorshkov was awarded the grand title of Wildlife Photographer of the Year this year for his image titled The Embrace, which shows a tigress from the endangered Amur population hugging an ancient tree in the sunlight of the Russian Far East.
The winners were announced on Tuesday 13 October by the Duchess of Cambridge during an awards ceremony streamed live over the internet from the Natural History Museum in London. Out of some 49,000 entries from professionals and amateurs around the world (a few fewer than usual this year), the jury chose Gorshkov’s image as “the best in the show” based on its flawless composition and dazzling colors, along with the important story behind photography.
“It is a scene like no other. A unique glimpse into an intimate moment deep within a magical forest, ”said Rosamund“ Roz ”Kidman Cox, chair of the judging panel and renowned environmental and wildlife editor in a statement to the media.
Take a deep breath and enjoy the winners of the Natural History Museum of London (UK) Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020 competition. The images are a perfect reminder of this beautiful world we live in (and that we should take more care of).
