How to care for a fish pond

Ponds make patios or gardens look much more beautiful. However, keeping them clean can be tricky. Plants, filters, and water products may help your pond stay cleaner longer. In addition, it is essential that you empty the pond at least once a year, removing all plants, water and fish before refilling it.

Use a biological filter

Biological filters contain bacteria that help remove organic waste from fish. In addition, you can choose between an external filter or a filter inside the pond. The filters in the pond are easy to install, although difficult to clean because all the gadget has to be removed. On the other hand, external filters are very easy to clean but it is difficult to get the correct size, since they are usually designed for swimming pools.

Also, your filter should filter twice as much water as your pond contains. That is, if a filter says it can properly filter 3000 liters, you can only use it if your pond has around 1500 liters of water.

Manually clean your pond

It is the cheapest method, but also the one that requires the most time. Remove leaves, twigs, and seeds with a pond skimmer (a net specifically designed for cleaning pools and ponds). Also, you can shop at most home care stores.

You can use a pond vacuum to clean the bottom of the pond. It is a tool that makes it easy to clean the algae, leaves and mud that are at the bottom. It can also be found in most stores.

Install a fountain and add plants

With moving water, algae or dirt is less likely to accumulate. Therefore, you could install a fountain or waterfall in your pond. Fountains can be placed right in the middle if their height does not exceed the depth of the pond.

On the other hand, some plants help to keep the pond clean naturally. Floating plants, such as the lotus flower or lilies, absorb the nutrients that algae use to thrive. On the other hand, submerged plants add oxygen to the water and can be placed between rocks.
