Why we shouldn't be afraid of sharks (more than necessary)

It is clear that Spielberg was not very amused by sharks . In 1975 a masterpiece of cinema was released, but it would have the counterpart that it would leave an indelible residue forever: the terror of being attacked by a shark in the sea.

This argument has been repeated by other films, some more relevant than others.

Throughout history, various shark attacks on humans have been documented, both minor injuries and disappearances or dismemberments. It is not an invention of the cinema, but how often do these attacks occur? Are there reasons to be afraid of sharks?

Florida is the place in the world where the most shark attacks occur each year. A section of the University of Florida, the Global Shark Attack File is dedicated to documenting all attacks that occur around the world; but also to disseminate information about these animals.

According to their data, so far in 2019 there have been 83 shark attacks, 5 of them fatal. In the last 20 years, the average number of attacks per year is about 70. And the average number of deaths per year is 5.

There are many things that could cause us death in our day to day; But, don’t we live constantly avoiding doing activities in which people have died? For example, traveling by car, by plane, or even going to the hospital, where you could contract a deadly infection.

The reasons why a shark could attack a human are diverse. A quarter of seizures occur in response to a human-initiated stimulus (such as during fishing, for example). Another reason is territoriality, that you feel invaded or unsafe; another is that it is overstimulated by the presence of many fish; or that it confuses the human being or the support where it is located (for example, a surfboard), with one of its usual prey.

Even the University of Florida explains that shark attacks sometimes occur simply because the animal is exploring the environment.

Despite what the statistics say, we must not forget that the shark is a predator , and that we must take a series of precautions with them, exactly as we would with any land predator if we approach their territory.

Sharks are fascinating creatures, there are 465 known subspecies, and they have been on Earth for 450 million years, that is, they are older than dinosaurs.
