The Republic of Botswana is the second largest producer of diamonds in the world after Russia and has been the scene of a brilliant and considerable discovery: a huge diamond of 1,111 carats whose value has not yet been determined (until a more exhaustive analysis of the gem) and which has been found in the Karowe mine in Botswana.
The company in charge of the extraction, Lucara Diamond, has reported in a press release that the huge gem is 65 x 56 x 40 millimeters in size and represents the second largest gem in history and the largest in more than a century , according to the company.
The largest diamond in the world is known as the Star of the South (in honor of the novel "The Star of the South" published by Jules Verne in 1884) or Cullinan. It had 3,106 carats (weighed over 3,000 carats raw) and was discovered in 1905 by Frederick Wells, surface manager for the Premier Diamond Mining Company in Cullinan, South Africa.
