You may be a pet lover and thinking of adopting or rescuing another furry off the street. However, pets require time, energy, resources, and space. They are also an economic expense, since you will have to take him to the vet (in case he is sick or needs vaccinations) and cut his coat regularly. Therefore, you must make sure that you can take care of all your animals as they deserve. Remember that they are a lifelong responsibility!
How much time do you spend with your pets?
You will have to groom your pets, feed them, take them for walks, play with them and take them to the vet when required. That involves a daily time, so you will have to assess if you really have time or if you can fulfill other obligations such as work, studies or family time.
Also, some animals require special care. Long-haired dogs, for example, have to be brushed daily. Likewise, bird and hamster cages should be disinfected and cleaned frequently.
Do you have enough space?
It is not the same to live in a small apartment without a patio than in a country house with a garden. Keep in mind that pets need enough space to walk and feel comfortable, so if you live in a small house you will not be able to house too many animals.
On the other hand, overcrowding has a negative effect on pets. Thus, in households with more than five cats there is a high probability of territory marking (often with urine). The more cats, the greater the threat they perceive. Therefore, you should assess whether bringing another animal home will stress your pets.
Calculate your expenses and create a budget
Write down your monthly income and expenses using bank statements, receipts and invoices. This will allow you to know how much you spend each month and the money you have. You will have to add the costs of rent or mortgage, insurance, food, electricity and water. You should also include expenses related to your pets such as food, dog grooming, toys, medications or veterinary expenses.
Keep in mind that bringing another pet home will change the numbers considerably, so you should think about whether you can afford it. If you can’t pay your bills on time or tend to pay your rent late, you probably shouldn’t have another pet.
