How to attract birds to your garden

Birds are curious and fun, which is why some people enjoy observing them in their garden. If you want the birds to go to your garden, patio or terrace you will have to make sure that they have enough food and water, as well as spaces to nest. In addition, once you have attracted the birds, you will be able to record all the species that visit your garden.

Choose a suitable feeder

You will have to choose an appropriate feeder for the birds in your area. In addition, regardless of the feeder you choose, you will have to clean it regularly and replace the seeds to prevent fungi or bacteria from growing. There are many kinds of feeders, but the most common are tray feeders (which attract pigeons, starlings, and sparrows) and game-shaped feeders (which attract finches, blue jays, sparrows, weevils, and chickadees).

You can also find tube feeders and tallow feeders. Tube feeders are cylindrical and have small holes for smaller seeds to enter. In addition, as they have small perches, it usually attracts small birds such as finches or sparrows. On the other hand, tallow feeders are built with a wire or plastic mesh that is nailed into the trunk of the tree. These feeders are ideal for woodpeckers, nuthatches or starlings.

Place varied food

Birds eat different foods. Therefore, if you want them to come to your garden you will have to place several feeders with different types of seeds. For example, you can try sunflower seeds and seed mixes, which attract a wide variety of bird species. However, seed mixes can make you dirtier, as birds will search for the tastiest seeds and discard the others.

You can also find nectar, orange or suet seeds, depending on the area where you live. In a store specialized in birds they will be able to advise you on which are the most suitable seeds for your garden.

Put a nest box

Nests can attract birds to your garden and encourage them to nest. Also, you can buy it at any pet store. If you can, choose a box made with insulating material like cedar, oak, or beech. In addition, each species needs a nest of a different size, so you should have one of the right size for the species you want to attract.

On the other hand, the nest box should not have a hanger, since they do not need it. In fact, some predators such as squirrels or cats could hang onto it and access the eggs and chicks that live inside the box.
