The Mazda MX-5 celebrates no less than 30 years of history this 2019, since the model, called to break the mold in the automotive world, was presented at the Chicago Auto Show, on February 9, 1989. In This time, the MX-5 has become the benchmark roadster, having achieved the certificate of the best-selling two-seater convertible in the world, thanks to its four generations and its more than one million units sold. However, throughout its history, it has always remained true to its original concept: a sports car that is light, accessible, reliable and, above all, fun to drive.
On the occasion of the celebration of its thirtieth birthday , the Japanese manufacturer has produced 3,000 units of a numbered collector’s edition, fifty of which will arrive in our country. This edition has opted for a sporty orange color on the bodywork and interior trim, as well as a numbered 30th anniversary emblem. In addition, it also has 17-inch forged aluminum wheels, a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G engine with 184 hp and a manual transmission.
However, until today, the MX-5 has a lot of history behind it . And it was a motoring journalist, named Bob Hall, who gave the main idea of the model to Kenichi Yamamoto, who at that time was responsible for the development of the brand. Although the market was working against it, and great dedication and determination was required, the project moved forward and, finally, saw the light. The result was that in 2000 it broke the record for the best-selling sports car in history, while in 2016 it manufactured its one millionth unit.
The Mazda MX-5 is also one of the models with the largest number of fan clubs around the world . In fact, Mazda’s passion for the two-seater is such that, throughout all these years, it has received numerous special versions, some of which are highly valued among collectors. In Spain, the current generation presented its special Ignition series in 2017, another called Red Heritage in 2018 and this 30th anniversary edition in 2019.
