Suggested 4-hour itinerary in Rome

A visit to Italy is not complete without visiting Rome, the eternal city. Traveling to Rome from Florence is relatively easy and inexpensive by taking the Freccia Italian express train. A second class ticket costs less than 50 euros and it will take 1½ hours (one way) to get you from Santa Maria Novella to Roma Termini (respectively train stations for Florence and Rome).

Upon reaching Roma Termini, I took the escalator to the Metro. For 6 euros you can ride the Metro for a day and make a stop to visit many of the most famous places in Rome.

My first stop on the metro was the Colosseum (the Colosseum). I must admit that when I arrived, the line of tourists seemed prohibitive and I almost went looking for a cappuccino. After spending several minutes without queuing, I found I could skip the line by going to the ticket window of the guided audio tour and get a ticket 15 euros in one of the oldest monuments of Rome. Prepare to marvel at the architecture of this magnificent arena. See more ways to skip the Colosseum ticket line.

From the Colosseo , walk towards the Roman Forum (Foro Romano), the old heart of the Roman Empire. You will walk through the ruins of the temple, the basilicas and a few meters more, the museums in the Capitol. Be sure to wander through this visual wonderland, a testament to the might and might of the mighty Romans. Admission to the Colosseum now includes entry to the Forum.

Next, head towards the Fontana Di Trevi , the Trevi Fountain. It was packed as expected with countless tourists, but it was still a visual feast for the eyes. The Baroque Neptune Fountain is a famous gathering place and a great area for ice cream , Italian ice cream. The Pantheon is about a 5-10 minute walk from the Trevi Fountain and offers another glimpse of the splendor of Rome.

The last visit on my Roman tour was the Spanish Steps in Piazza Di Spagna . It is another famous meeting place for tourists who can be heard chatting enthusiastically about the wonders of Rome. The metro is close by and quickly transported me back to Roma Termini for my return trip to Florence.

Walking Rome is easily manageable with a city map, sturdy walking shoes, and a desire to explore what the Eternal City has to offer!
