The best beaches in Malaga: where to swim and sunbathe

A shining jewel of a Mediterranean metropolis along Spain’s picturesque southern coast, Malaga’s status as the capital of the Costa del Sol has helped it earn its reputation as a vacation spot. Every summer, thousands of visitors, from all over Spain, Europe and the world, flock to the city and its surroundings, eager to take advantage of the region’s world-class beaches.

Obviously, these beaches are the main attraction of Malaga, especially in the warmer months. However, the sheer number of beaches in and around the city can make it difficult to determine which is the best option, especially for newcomers.

Each of Malaga’s beaches has its own special charm, and even if one is not your scene, there will surely be another.

If you are not too picky, the question of which beach to visit in Malaga can simply be answered by how lazy you feel that day. Do you agree with only visiting the beach closest to your hotel? Do you mind taking a half-hour walk to something less crowded? Would you rather get on a bus and visit one of the remote beaches in the region that is frequented by fewer tourists?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are in the right place. Here are the best beaches in and around Malaga, so you can be sure to choose the perfect vacation spot.

Nearest beach to the city of Malaga

If you plan to stay local, the most popular beach in Malaga is Playa de la Malagueta. It is a 20-minute walk from Plaza de la Constitución, the city’s most vibrant and iconic square.

With many chiringuitos (beach bars) and cafes nearby, there is no shortage of drinks and dining options near La Malagueta. However, the sand is not as fine here as it is at other beaches, and the view of the harbor just offshore is a bit of a bummer.

The most authentic beach within walking distance

La Malagueta’s convenient location makes it a popular choice with tourists, and few locals will brave the crowds here. Instead, locals usually take a short walk to Playa de las Acacias in the serene suburb of Pedregalejo, east of the city center.

Pedregalejo, a quiet old fishing village, maintains much of its old world charm while providing all the modern conveniences you could ask for. The picturesque town and the friendly local atmosphere on the beach make it well worth the extra effort it takes to get there from central Malaga.

If you want to stretch your legs, it will take you about an hour to get to the beach from Plaza de la Constitución, or 40 minutes from La Malagueta beach. If you have your hands full of beach supplies or prefer not to make the trip on foot, the number 11 bus from Alameda Principal will take you to the beach.

The best beach in the province of Malaga

While the city of Malaga itself offers many stunning beaches, they are not the end of summer in the region. If your itinerary and budget allow, consider taking a trip to one of the other incredible beaches in the province of Malaga.

The beaches near the town of Nerja are the best in the Malaga region. ALSA, Spain’s national bus company, operates a service from Malaga bus station to Nerja, with buses generally leaving every 30 to 45 minutes. The trip lasts between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on the number of stops along the route. When booking, keep in mind that some buses go to the ‘caves’.

The main bus to Nerja takes you to the city center. There are numerous beaches along the coast that are worth seeing, but the best way to find them would be to rent a car and drive around to find what is appropriate for you. Whether you are looking for something buzzing and happening or a more peaceful and secluded place, there is sure to be a beach in Nerja where you will feel right at home.
