Many drivers use the convenient E-ZPass® system to avoid waiting in long toll lines when crossing area bridges or traveling on major highways. While most of Brooklyn’s highways are free, there are three major bridges that require a toll. (The Brooklyn Bridge, however, is free!)
Is it worth the hassle? Of course. Because when you’re trying to get out of Brooklyn, say go to the beaches of Long Island, Columbia County, or Washington DC, saving just a few minutes at each toll can certainly be time-consuming, especially on vacation and summer. weekends
The only real downside to the E-ZPass® system is that it automatically charges whatever credit cards you have on file, and it’s not always the same amount.

Or, you can stop at a participating retailer (see list here) and purchase a prepackaged “account kit,” which in Brooklyn, New York, and Long Island costs $ 30. (It costs $ 25 elsewhere).
It’s simple: just stick the sticker on your windshield and go. But you must register that tag within 48 hours. If you are already an account holder, and find your level is low, you can pick up one of these passes “on the fly” and add that amount to your account when you return to your computer.

How does it work
If you need to replenish your account, the system automatically charges your credit card. How much? Your system solves this; your account is replenished according to your average usage pattern.
According to the E-ZPass® website, “Amounts are calculated to equal one month of average usage, based on usage over the past 90 days. Replenishment quantities can vary and the timing of replenishment is not always consistent. ‘

Tip to discontinue your account: be careful with the packaging
Be sure to pack your E-ZPass® label according to the instructions, or wrap it tightly in aluminum foil.
Why?
Because otherwise, your EZPass tag can cost you a lot of money.
For example, if you simply flip the E-ZPass® label on an envelope and mail it to the MTA Bridges and Tunnels address, it is likely to “read” along the way. That may mean they charge you a whopping $ 36.24 to cross the Verrazano-Narrows, in a mail truck heading to the EZ Pass warehouse. Really.
