Easter traditions in Hungary

Easter in Hungary is celebrated with popular traditions and festivals that mark this spring break. Visitors to Budapest can take part in the Spring Festival, which precedes or coincides with Easter every year. This two-week event celebrates the season with concerts, performances, classes, and an annual market. Villages throughout Hungary will celebrate according to their own traditions and can organize official Easter festivals.

Easter traditions in Hungary

A Hungarian Easter tradition is “sprinkling”, which can take the form of dousing another person with water (usually a woman) or dousing their hair with perfume. This ritual is associated with fertility and cleansing rites that remain from pagan times.

Similar to sprinkling, “whipping” can also occur. Traditionally, boys beat girls with switches in memory of another fertility ritual.

The modern tradition of the Easter bunny has come to Hungary. Many children participate in an Easter egg hunt and receive Easter baskets brought by the Easter bunny.

Easter-related celebrations take place for more than a week in Hungary. Palm Sunday is called “Flower Sunday” in Hungary. Good Friday is a day to clean and decorate the eggs. On Easter Saturday, the Easter baskets are brought to church and blessed. On Easter Sunday, the Lenten fast is broken with meat dishes. The sprinkling or sprinkling takes place on Easter Monday, also a public holiday in Hungary.

Hungarian Easter Eggs

Easter egg decoration is an ancient tradition that Hungarians still participate in. During this time, find eggs decorated with Hungarian motifs, including those that mimic Hungarian embroidery in colorful floral designs. Simple, home-made eggs can have the imprint of a leaf that was secured during the dying process. Dark red Easter eggs, sometimes with a white design, are reminiscent of the shedding of the blood of Christ. The most difficult thing to decorate Easter eggs in Hungary is with small metal horseshoes, which require the experience of the egg decorator, whose hands must be firm and agility advanced enough not to break the eggshell when fixing the horseshoe on the blown egg.

Easter food

Hungarian Easter food is made hearty with the inclusion of eggs and ham. Horseradish is also an important part of Hungarian food. A braided loaf of bread will also be included on the festive table. This festive bread forms a circle and can also be part of other seasonal parties, such as Christmas.

Some of these eggs will appear in ceramic or wood form, although real eggshell decorations can also be found using traditional patterns and techniques.

Easter in Budapest

If you travel to Hungary during Easter, see what other events are held for Budapest in March or Budapest in April. These guides also provide information on average weather conditions in Budapest and make suggestions on what to pack so that you can get the most out of your Easter season trip. For example, the annual Easter market at Vorosmarty Square is a great place to find handmade crafts and seasonal decorations; You can even talk to the artists responsible for making the items for sale.

Another Easter market appears in the Museum of Ethnography. A series of events is also organized for the annual Easter event at Buda Castle.

However, you don’t have to limit yourself to Budapest to search for Hungarian traditions for this special time of year. Certain towns in Hungary are known for their Easter celebrations, including Mezőkövesd, famous for its Matyo folk art.
