Frederick Douglass National Historic Site

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site honors the life and achievements of Frederick Douglass. Douglass broke free from slavery and helped free millions of people. He lived in Rochester, New York throughout the Civil War. After the war, he moved to Washington DC to serve in international affairs, on the Governing Council for the District of Columbia and as United States Marshal for the District. In 1877 he purchased his home, which he named Cedar Hill and later became the location of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.

The view of the nation’s capital from Cedar Hill is breathtaking.
