July Vacation Activities in Texas

July is the best summer month in America. Texas is no different. For many families, July is the last full month of summer, as schoolchildren usually return to class sometime during August. Thanks to the consistently hot weather, all traditional summer activities are in full swing in July. And of course you have Independence Day and all the celebrations that go with it. In short, July is an ideal time to schedule a summer vacation. If you go on vacation in July, you will find there is plenty to see and do in Texas throughout the month.

As is the case across the country, July 4 sets the tone for mid-summer in Texas. There are a variety of July 4th events in Texas each year. All major cities in Texas – Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio – celebrate the 4th of July with impressive fireworks. The “Fireworks Capital of Texas,” South Padre Island also hosts a tremendous Fourth of July fireworks display. Probably the most unique – and famous – 4th of July tradition in Texas is the annual July 4th Family Picnic in Luckenbach.

Originally hosted by Willie Nelson and cohorts, the tradition of live music, great food, and family fun each year at the Fourth has continued in Luckenbach.

Beyond the celebrations and fireworks, many visitors head to the beach, not just for Independence Day, but for the entire month of July. Texas is home to a number of excellent beaches, and thanks to July’s generally stable weather, there is a wide variety of activities available for beach lovers. Swimming, surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, sunbathing, fishing, and much more are top activities for those heading to the beach in Texas. The only real concern for those hoping to have a Texas coastal vacation during July is the possibility of a tropical storm or hurricane.

July, after all, is in the middle of hurricane season. However, while visitors should be aware of the possibility of a storm while visiting Texas during hurricane season, such events are relatively rare and July is generally one of the most stable weather months in Texas.

Of course, not all summer outdoor activities are contained on the beach. Texas has several rivers and lakes, which also offer excellent opportunities for water sports. Swimming, skiing, boating, and fishing are popular activities throughout the summer. In many rivers, especially in the Texas Hill Country, “tubing,” or drifting downstream in an inflated tube, is a popular summer pastime. Texas is also home to a number of excellent “swimming holes,” such as Barton Springs, Perdernales Falls, Hamilton Pool Preserve, and Krause Springs.

In the Hill Country and West Texas regions, rock climbing is also popular this time of year. And, every region of the state offers opportunities for hiking, camping, mountain biking, bird watching and more during July. Those looking for outdoor recreation should make plans to visit one of Texas’s many state parks during July. Parks like Garner State Park in Concan offer a variety of outdoor activities for both day visitors and night campers.

While everyone is aware of the many 4th of July celebrations that were organized throughout Texas during July, there are many other annual festivals this month as well. In fact, there is quite a bit of diversity in the Texas event calendar for July: sporting events, fishing tournaments, and several unique festivals fill the weekends of July in Texas. In Clute, the annual Great Mosquito Festival is always popular, as is the Parker County Peach Festival. On the middle coast, the annual Port Aransas deep-water rodeo always draws a crowd.

Those looking for sporting events will be interested in the TAAF Summer Games, an Olympic-style competition for amateur athletes in Texas, or the Cleburne Goatneck 100k Bike Race, which draws more than 1,500 riders each year.
