It was one of the most unexpected announcements of its time, but it began the consolidation of what is now completely massive. Final Fantasy XI became the first installment of the Square Enix franchise to veer towards the online section.
For many years, the title service originally launched in 2002 for the PS2 and PC worked really well, until the end of their servers. Therefore, a reboot of the title was announced in March 2015 and its release was planned for 2016. Now, according to Gamebiz.jp, the development has finally been canceled.
During a financial results telephone meeting on February 9, Owen Mahony, president of Nexon , confirmed the cancellation. Nexon is the company that was handling the project jointly with Square Enix.
The decision has been shared, since both understood that the work was not meeting the expected quality standards, from a creative perspective.
Members who have been part of the development team will be sent to other titles. In December last year, Korean media reported on development disruptions.
