The official Chinese state news agency Xinhua has reported the birth of a healthy baby to a woman diagnosed with coronavirus in the capital of Heilongjiang (northeast China).

His mother was 38 weeks pregnant when on Thursday, January 30, she had a fever of 37.3 degrees Celsius. He was diagnosed with coronavirus (2019-nCoV), a pathogen that has already killed 362 people.

So they decided to perform an emergency cesarean section at Harbin Hospital No. 6. His son, who weighed 3 kilos at birth, is doing well, although both he and his mother are in quarantine.

Apgar score of 10

According to the deputy director of the hospital where the mother and her baby are admitted, Na Hui, the baby had an Apgar score of 10, the highest possible. In addition, the tests carried out on the newborn on Friday and Sunday were negative.

The two are in quarantine and have medical teams assigned to monitor their progress.

That’s how proud the medical team posed, holding the baby, for the China Daily.

Another newborn in Wuhan

But it is not the only case of a new life born in the middle of an outbreak of an infected woman. Last week, the Reuters news agency quoted local television in the city of Wuhan (at the epicenter of the outbreak), to tell how a doctor from the Wuhan Union Hospital helped deliver a baby.

The 27-year-old woman, named Xiaoyan, is believed to have been infected with the new coronavirus when she was 37 weeks pregnant. Doctors had not yet been able to confirm the infection, but since they could not treat the disease during pregnancy, they decided to perform a cesarean section.

Zhao Yin, deputy director of obstetrics and gynecology at Wuhan Union Hospital, explained that he wore two protective suits, goggles and a mask during surgery to avoid getting infected, as the woman would not stop coughing and had a high fever.

The mother has expressed on state television her only wish is that her baby, who weighed 3.1 kg at birth , is healthy. For now, the baby was taken home to prevent it from getting infected, according to the Reuters news agency.
