A woman gives birth to a healthy baby in Seville after suffering a brain hemorrhage at 27 weeks of pregnancy

In the middle of the second wave of Covid receiving good news that has nothing to do with the pandemic, it is always well received. And more if they have to do with a healthy birth in a city very affected by the virus, such as Seville. This is one of them.

The Virgen del Rocío Hospital in the capital of Seville has managed to make Saray, a 29-year-old woman, carry her pregnancy to term and give birth to her baby, Pilar, after suffering a brain hemorrhage at 27 weeks of gestation. The mother underwent a cesarean section and later a craniotomy. Mother and daughter are doing well.

Successful double intervention

Saray was in the third trimester of her pregnancy when she suddenly suffered a left hemiplegia caused by a ruptured arterio-venous malformation, which she did not know she had, and she was admitted to the Neurosurgery unit of the Virgen del Rocío Hospital.

The specialists observed that the demands of the pregnancy posed a risk for the mother, who could suffer a new cerebral bleeding due to the vascular malformation. Therefore, they decided to coordinate a procedure between Neurosurgery and Maternal Fetal Medicine.

They planned a double intervention that consisted of a cesarean section and removal of the lesion once the gestation reached an optimal moment. After evaluating the risks and benefits of an intervention, taking into account gestational age, they decided to organize the surgery for the 32nd week of pregnancy. Until then, the woman remained admitted to the Vascular Unit.

The interventions were carried out without complications and the postoperative period went well, therefore, 72 hours after the intervention, and after carrying out the radiological tests that guarantee the resolution of the vascular malformation, Saray was transferred to the Women’s Hospital, where she was admitted. to continue with both postpartum and neurological care, as well as rehabilitation.

During this time, the hospital has provided all the means to continue breastfeeding, the mother’s wish, despite the difficulties she presented.

The newborn has been discharged this week while her mother recovers at the Women’s Hospital.
