Abu Dhabi F1 test: Russell and Mercedes lead the morning, Sainz 2nd

On the second and last day of the F1 2021 post-season test in Abu Dhabi, there are fewer cars on the track compared to Monday, since of the young drivers who drive with 2021 single-seaters, only Robert Shwartzman is at the wheel of Haas, a team that in the first day did not take out any young driver.

The rest are at the controls of adapted cars (“crutches”) for the 18-inch Pirelli tires that Formula 1 will use in 2022. And among them, Russell , the only representative of Mercedes in these two days with the new tires, marked the best time of the first four hours before the lunch break.

The Briton stopped the clock in 1:26.404, adapting for the second consecutive day to what his team will be next year, and in fact it was also the most active. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, is absent from these days because today he will be appointed Knight of the British Empire at Windsor Castle.

Nor is any Williams present on the track, as the team does not have available single-seaters adapted for the 18-inch Pirelli test. As for the new wheel rims, McLaren repeated the experiment with LED lights on their tyres, this time during Lando Norris’ installation lap at the start of practice.

Russell dropped from the first position to a Carlos Sainz who led the first hours with the adapted 2019 Ferrari, and who beat Norris ‘s 2021 McLaren also adapted by only 0.030. Only the three of them were below 1:27 among the drivers with the 18-inch wheels and modified cars.

Shwartzman , who after testing the Ferrari on Tuesday got behind the wheel of the Haas VF-21 with which Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher contested the recent Abu Dhabi GP, set a 1:26.980 that left him fourth halfway through the day.

Fifth was a Vettel who suffered problems in the Aston Martin (causing a red flag by stopping on the track), which meant he was able to do only 27 laps in the morning. Alonso, at the wheel of the 2018 Renault RS18, came into the break with the eighth fastest time, and 45 laps in the opening hours.

In the Haas with the 18-inch Pirelli is Pietro Fittipaldi , Nikita Mazepin’s replacement after the Russian tested positive for COVID-19 last Sunday.
