After deadly shots: murdered policeman is buried

The act caused horror far beyond Rhineland-Palatinate: two police officers were killed during a traffic check. At the funeral, the focus is now on the mourning for the murdered.

Freisen – Two weeks after two police officers were shot dead in the West Palatinate, the 29-year-old police commissioner was buried in his hometown of Freisen in Saarland.

The interior ministers of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are also expected to attend the funeral service in the town in the St. Wendel district.

First, about 80 invited guests, including relatives, friends and colleagues, will say goodbye at a non-public service (2 p.m.) in the church. Since the participation in Freisen is great, the fair is broadcast to around 500 guests in a hall. In front of the hall, the police are expecting many more mourners. You can follow the service there via audio transmission. Burial will then take place in the local cemetery.

Shot during vehicle inspection

The police commissioner and a 24-year-old police candidate were shot dead on January 31 during a vehicle check near Kusel. As suspected perpetrators, two men from Saarland are in custody on suspicion of joint murder.

The act had sparked nationwide horror. The investigators assume that the men wanted to cover up poaching with the act. The police candidate is to be buried on Wednesday (11:00 a.m.) in Homburg-Erbach, Saarland. The state government of Rhineland-Palatinate is also preparing an official funeral service for the two police officers together with the police. A date will be announced later.

The “question why”

The Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of Justice Herbert Mertin said last week that he hoped that the crime would be clarified quickly. “We owe that to the two people who were killed.” One of the suspects admitted to having poached with the other suspect on the night of the crime, said the FDP politician. The man also stated that he was also at the scene of the crime, but did not shoot.

The other suspect is making use of his right to remain silent. The “question as to why” will hopefully be answered by the investigation, Mertin had emphasized. dpa
