The 2022 season has so far been the strongest that Aleix Espargaró has had in his career, as he achieved his first MotoGP victory at the last Argentine Grand Prix. Since then he has added four more podium finishes, finishing outside the top 5 just twice in eleven races.
His world champion aspirations suffered a setback in Barcelona, when he miscalculated the number of laps, celebrating with an early lap and missing out on another podium finish. But in Assen, the last race before the summer break, he was the author of a great comeback after an accident with Fabio Quartararo caused him to end up in the gravel.
Ahead of the summer break, Espargaro said keeping the drivers’ championship lead below 25 points was his main goal, but admits he needed the five-week break to rest. “Honestly, I’m very tired. I’m really exhausted,” said the man from Granollers.
“I need to rest. Not five weeks, but above all mentally this year for me is completely different from the others. I think it’s normal, I’m fighting for the title. I’m happy because I said I wanted to go on vacation less than a race from distance (in points) behind Fabio and I’m 21 behind him, so we’ll keep pushing.”
Aleix Espargaró is in the second half of the season with his future already assured in Aprilia, after having announced the renewal for two more years last May.
The second part of the championship will start on the first weekend of August with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where last year the Catalan driver got his first podium with a third position.
