Alex Márquez finished his debut in the LCR-Honda team last Sunday in Qatar with a crash and hopes to have eliminated the nerves of the first weekend of the year to face the second stop on the calendar with more calm, also in Losail .
The Honda rider was guilty of a lack of aggressiveness and of being a little more daring at some points in the race, basically due to the fact that he started so far behind after not being able to qualify for Q2, a problem that has dragged on since last year.
“Last week we made two attacks on the clock on Friday afternoon, and we are going to go the same way, maybe we will make some changes, trying to execute it in the best way. FP2 marks the classification for Q2 in this circuit, and you have to take advantage of it. It seems that it is easier to get through in free practice than in Q1, where everyone pushes hard. Let’s see if we can do something with this issue this weekend”, says the man from Lleida.
For Alex , getting through to Q2 is becoming a bit of a wall.
“Last year it cost me a lot, this year with the electronic improvements it is a little easier in one lap, now it is not that it is easier, but we lacked less, about two tenths, not like last year that we were one second . The Honda may not be the easiest bike on one lap, but I also have to take a step forward with the new tyre. In the past, in Moto2, I was good at one lap, it worries me a bit because it’s important, but with time I’ll understand and I hope it won’t take long”.
During the race, despite having a good pace, the #73 got stuck at times as it couldn’t overtake.
“Overtaking depends on who you have in front, there are some points where you can pass, but the air also affected the race on Sunday. You can’t take so many risks, I lacked aggressiveness, believing in it more and not making silly mistakes. We will start strong and aggressive this weekend.”
At that point, the two-time world champion believes that improvement does not depend on just one thing.
“It’s a whole team, I wouldn’t know what we’re missing, if someone has room it’s more me than dizzy changing the bike. There are things that can be improved, but we can’t go crazy. We’ve been here for many days, we have to try to improve to get to Q2, with great enthusiasm because I think we have the potential to do better and the race pace is good”.
The youngest of the Márquez did not want to be dazzled by his first crash of the year in the race.
“More than the crash, what I have thought about most these days is the start, the first lap, being more aggressive, some points where I was able to overtake and I didn’t. The crash is clearly not to my liking, but it was a mistake for not following my riding style and following the lines of other riders. The conditions did not allow me to do my style and we have to achieve it. We have to improve the qualy and the first laps, we have freed ourselves from the nerves of the first race and that is positive”, settled the one from Cervera .
