Alex Márquez: "If the change doesn't go well, I'll be the first to say I'm no good"

Early this Sunday, the Gresini team officially announced the signing of Alex Márquez for the next two seasons, after signing the agreement on Saturday afternoon. In this way, the Catalan will change his current Honda for a 2022 Ducati , an exit sought after understanding that he could not continue with the current motorcycle.

“I think it’s the best option I could have on the table, so I’m happy. I think they’re a team that want to do well, and I, personally, needed a change and now, with the future closed, I can go on vacation and try to finish the season in the best possible way”.

Seeing the results of the young riders on the Ducati, Alex was asked what he thought he was capable of on that bike.

“I don’t know, I don’t like to talk about a bike without trying it, many riders have been fast with it, surely it suits many riding styles, but on paper it’s a good bike and that’s why I took the opportunity to go there. I believe in the project, the bike and the team.”

The bike that Márquez will leave will go to the hands of Alex Rins, and also to those of Joan Mir in the official team…

“Well, time will tell. In the end they go to Honda, it is a factory that has lost its way right now, but if a brand can react it is Honda, only that mentally and personally I needed a change, to continue growing and it is the best option that I had.”

It is to imagine that a decision of this nature is consulted with the older brother, and more if it is Marc Márquez.

“In the end he asked me what I wanted, if he saw me at Honda or not, I told him I needed a change and when a decision is made we support each other and he has supported me, like a normal brother would.”

Alex was asked if in addition to going to Gresini-Ducati, he had the option of staying at Honda if nothing else had come up.

“I spoke to Lucio [Cecchinello] and told him that I didn’t see myself on this bike, that it was my choice and that I didn’t know if I was going to go home or where, but I don’t see myself here, I need a change. Mentally we’ve had a season and a half very hard and I needed a change, and this change is going to help me a lot”.

After a year and a half of suffering, it is sometimes forgotten that Alex is a two-time world champion and that he achieved two podium finishes in his rookie year in MotoGP.

“Sometimes it is clear that you doubt yourself, I will be worth it or I will not be worth it. What better way than to have a Ducati and if next year it does not turn out as it should, I will be the first to say that I am not good enough, that I am not made to be here,” he said.

“In 2020 I think I showed the level to be in MotoGP, I’m a double world champion, but you have to prove all this on the track and that’s why I’ve made the decision, I think I can do well there, otherwise I won’t I would have made the decision. I have taken a weight off myself, I wanted to go on vacation in peace, I need rest more than ever”, settled the boy from Cervera.
