Alexandria was founded in 1749 and was one of the busiest ports in America. It was the hometown of George Washington and Robert E. Lee. The city of Alexandria was home to the largest slave trade company in the country and a large community of free blacks. During the Civil War, Alexandria was an occupied city; enduring the longest military occupation by Union troops of any city during the conflict.
