The classification of the British GP was under (or on) the rain and in memory the recital that Alonso had given in similar conditions on the last F1 Saturday, the one in Canada, was very recent.
The Spaniard had no problems getting to Q3. First, in a Q1 in which he and Esteban Ocon were the last to go out on the track, he ended up being tenth, and then he went through Q2 with the seventh best position, while his teammate was eliminated.
In Q3, held without going through the pits and with numerous laps for each driver, Fernando Alonso came to appear for the top positions in the early stages, but finally could not get past seventh place, and will share the fourth row of the grid with George Russell.
The one from Alpine had the misfortune of being the last to cross the finish line and make an extra lap, which in other conditions is an advantage, but this Saturday it was not. And it is that while the majority made a slow lap and another attack to keep the tires in optimal conditions, Alonso attacked in that penultimate lap after which he had one more left.
At the DAZN F1 microphones, he admitted that such a tactic didn’t leave him feeling the best.
“It went well, the truth is that it was comfortable in the rain in Q1. We spent one game and then in Q2 it was also comfortable,” he began. “And in Q3 I think we had more, in the end I was left with a slightly bittersweet taste in my mouth because we passed the finish line first, I think we calculated it a bit wrong. Maybe we should have done another slow lap and shoot at the end, but I didn’t have that information and I was a bit surprised to get through first.
However, Alonso remembered precisely his exhibition in Montreal, where he qualified on the front row of the grid (second) but later in the race he could not keep up with the cars with much more pace.
“But hey, it is what it is and in the end, as we saw in Canada, sometimes you qualify too well and then you end up in your natural position in the race, so having done fourth or fifth in qualifying wouldn’t have changed much for tomorrow, because I think Russell or Hamilton are going to go faster, so seventh is fine.”
They also asked him about the porpoising that the A522 suffered on Friday and in part of FP3 on Saturday. However, the two-time champion says he is under control: “On Friday the truth is that we were a bit surprised to have that rebound. We made several changes at night and today in the morning they were solved, so in the race we shouldn’t have any problems” .
And after two days affected by the rain at Silverstone, the #14 is not sure if he wants it to be repeated on Sunday when, at least according to the forecasts, the chances of precipitation are very low.
“On the one hand I would say yes, because it seems that we are a little more competitive, we could be in the top 5, but well, in the end those of us who entered Q3 used several sets of tires during the qualifying trial and, if it rained, I think that those who start behind had a bit of an advantage with more new tyres”.
“So to even things out a bit, in the dry it would be fine. And that way people don’t get wet,” he concluded, laughing.
