After a poor run at the start of the season, with reliability problems and costly mistakes, Fernando Alonso returned to the points at his home race in Barcelona and achieved his best result to date at the last Monaco Grand Prix by finishing in seventh place.
With the illusion completely renewed, the Asturian driver has arrived at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with hopes of continuing his streak of points, but he regrets that this moment has not come before, since he considers that several weeks ago they were much closer to the teams that they currently lead the pecking order on the grid.
In the run-up to the race in Baku, Alonso acknowledged that Alpine came to be very close to Ferrari and Red Bull in some race weekends at the beginning of 2022: “I think that at the beginning of the course we were more competitive, but we didn’t manage to We score points for reliability issues, mistakes and bad luck.”
“I think in Australia we were close to Ferrari , Red Bull and Mercedes, but now they are a bit far away. So yes, maybe we are not in that position or we don’t deserve to fight for the podium, maybe our position is seventh,” he added.
Despite this, the Spaniard preferred not to rule out the podium for this weekend, since, as the last editions of the Azerbaijan GP have shown, anything can happen and, if you are on the right side of the scale and take advantage of the opportunities, nothing is impossible in Baku .
“But well, let’s see, I think that in Baku the races are very special, with many things that happen. It is an urban race, yes, but here Saturday may not be the priority, it is more the pace for Sunday. and be on the lookout for any opportunities that might arise with safety cars or red flags. So yeah, nothing is impossible.”
“I think we all want some action on Sunday. It’s a very distinctive racing circuit. Normally the cars suffer a lot of damping in Monaco, Singapore and circuits like that, but here we all come with a very low car that causes errors and gives spectacle to the race. race”, concluded the one from Alpine .
At this time and after seven races, Alonso is in thirteenth position in the drivers’ standings with a total of 10 points, 20 less than his teammate, Esteban Ocon, who in one way or another has managed to avoid problems.
