Alonso hopes to continue in F1 "at least two or three more years"; and then?

On the first day of the F1 summer break, Alonso shocked everyone when his move to Aston Martin and thus his departure from his current team was revealed.

In addition to certain rudeness on the part of Alpine, one of the main keys to the change of team was the duration of the contract, since while the Gauls offered him only to renew year after year, at Aston Martin he achieved an agreement for two courses, regardless of his age.

That will leave Fernando Alonso in green until the end of 2024, in what will be his 21st season in the top flight. However, the Asturian does not believe that we will see his definitive goodbye to F1 there, as he revealed in an interview with DAZN F1 that you can already see on his platform (and that they will broadcast live this Sunday).

Defending his current level, the two-time world champion explains about his future in F1 that he doesn’t think it will end soon: “I will always race, because I like to compete, to drive. I have an example and a clear inspiration in Carlos Sainz Sr., who follows the foot of the canyon, winning the Dakar, etc., so I know that I have the rope for a while.

“I hope to be in Formula 1 for at least two or three more years, I think I am 100%.”

And then? During his time outside the premier class he competed in IMSA ( Daytona ), WEC ( Le Mans and the full championship ), IndyCar ( Indy 500 ), and also competed in the Dakar. And, although he has never hidden that his desire is to achieve the Triple Crown of Motorsports by winning in Indianapolis, he also wants to repeat himself among the doubts. “Then, from there, a challenge that I have never hidden is to try the Dakar again,” he says.

The participation of the genius from Oviedo in the Dakar 2020 resulted in a 13th place overall and second place as the best stage result, leaving great sensations. To return to.

When asked if he sees himself in the future in an F1 team as team manager or in a similar position, he declared: “Right now I don’t see myself, but I can’t say I won’t, because life can take many turns.” .

“When I stop racing, coming in another function other than that of the pilot would cost me, so…”.

Regarding his new team, Aston Martin, his decision has generated some doubts as it is a team that is penultimate in the 2022 constructors’ championship (while Alpine is fourth). But Alonso is clear: “I decided because of the desire I saw on the part of Aston Martin to have me and, perhaps, those that were missing in Alpine. Or the signs of affection that perhaps I did not have here.”

“We started talking in Australia about a possible renewal and we got to July 31, when I signed with Aston Martin, still without a full-fledged contract. And I always had that impression too that Alpine had a little problem with Piastri, that they should have find him a seat. I thought it was the best solution for everyone, and I was also going to a project that seemed more ambitious than Alpine”.

Finally Alpine was left without Alonso and also without Piastri. If Fernando was wrong or right, as always, time will tell.
