Formula 1 travels to Azerbaijan after a controversial Monaco Grand Prix due to the delay of the start and the FIA’s way of making decisions, but the drivers and teams cannot be distracted from their objective in order to add the maximum number of possible points this weekend.
In Alpine, after harvesting a seventh position with Fernando Alonso, they arrive confident, since they have shown a great one-lap pace throughout the season in qualifying, and they are aware that their weak point is race pace. However, Baku is a track where it is possible to easily overtake with the help of DRS , so keeping up with your rivals will be key.
The man from Oviedo, who wants to reverse the negative dynamics in which he has been sinking all year until Monte Carlo, explained what he expects from this event on a track where the driver’s hands matter a lot due to the narrow nature of the second sector.
“Now we have a lot of street circuits in Formula 1. I like them because there really is no margin for error,” said Alonso. “Baku is a circuit where it is very possible to overtake, in the last three races I have done there I have managed to gain several places during the race, so it is very different to Monaco in that sense.
The Spaniard put in one of the best performances of his career in 2018 , when he was at the back of the pack with just two wheels in a very uncompetitive McLaren on the opening lap and finished just ten seconds behind the winner in seventh place.
“It’s a fun circuit and it’s possible to overtake,” he continued. “There’s a mix of high and low speed corners and a very long straight so you have to be prepared for that, it will be interesting to see how the 2022 cars go around this track.”
Fernando Alonso has only scored 10 points so far this season in seven races due to the misfortunes that have come his way, but he believes that this weekend will be different, or at least that he will have a good time on the asphalt of the capital Azerbaijani.
“I can’t compare it to a circuit we’ve already raced on this year. Also, Saturdays don’t necessarily decide the race there, and a safety car can completely shake up the order, I think it will be a lot of fun, and I’m excited for the challenge.” that awaits us,” said the pilot.
